From early morning, parents begin transporting ingredients along winding mountain roads. Upon receiving the ingredients from the parents, teachers get to work washing vegetables, slicing meat, lighting stoves... The work begins at 8 a.m. and often continues until noon, as every step is carefully done by the teachers themselves.
A homeroom teacher at the site shared the challenges of rainy days:
“Cooking for the kids is joyful and fulfilling, but on rainy days, the path to the school becomes slippery and transporting ingredients is much more difficult. The firewood gets wet and won’t catch fire easily, which delays the meal. But even then, the children patiently wait with their teacher.”
Perhaps it is the children’s eagerness to come to school each day and their visible growth over each semester that gives parents the motivation to send them to school regularly, and gives teachers the strength to continue this challenging journey with perseverance and faith.
The "Growing up with mountainous students project is a journey of love, built upon the collaboration of schools, families, and generous sponsors. Thanks to this close-knit support from everyone around, school meals are not only more nutritious, but also carry with them hope for a brighter future for children in these remote mountainous areas.
