Did you know? - According to Suc Khoe & Doi Song (the official publication of the Ministry of Health), lunch provides 30% to 35% of a child’s total daily energy intake, while the afternoon meal provides 15% to 25% for kindergarten-aged children.

Understanding this importance, For Vietnamese Stature Foundation (VSF) always prioritizes implementing afternoon snacks in the Growing up with mountainous students project. For the children supported by the project, in addition to a nutritious lunch with rice, vegetables, fish or meat, they also enjoy an afternoon snack that alternates between savory and sweet dishes, such as porridge, banh beo, noodles, glass noodles, pho, sticky rice, sweet pastries, pizza, fried dough sticks, or sweet soup.

“Whenever the children eat, I can clearly feel their joy and appetite. When I bring out bowls of porridge, they happily receive them and eat with enthusiasm. Seeing them enjoy their food so much makes me truly happy. Thanks to these afternoon snacks, the children have more energy to learn and play in the afternoon, becoming more active and diligent during each lesson,”  shared Ms. Be Nong Thi Kim Chi, teacher at the Lung Chang school site, Thai Son Kindergarten.

According to the teachers, each child has their own favorite dish. Some love porridge, some prefer noodles, and some are most excited about pizza. But the common point is that they all eat happily and never leave even a bite uneaten.

The teachers also observed that afternoon snacks play an important role in children’s development. After a morning of learning and an afternoon nap, a light meal helps them recover energy, improve physical strength, stay alert, and feel excited to continue learning and playing. As a result, they become more focused, well-behaved, and full of vitality throughout the day.

VSF hopes that each meal will bring children abundant nutrition and energy so they can learn, play, and grow strong and healthy every day!
