Dream of two orphan brothers

           Chau Hong Kindergarten has only 271 kids but 7 of them are with difficult circumstance, left motherless or fatherless or orphaned. Their biggest dream is a chance of getting education as other kids.

A struggling life without parents

“Most parents of students in this school are very poor workers at mines and quarries in Quy Hop commune, Nghe An province”, Mrs. Truong Thi Lien – principle of Chau Hong Kindergarten said. Unsafe working condition in these mines and quarries has caused injury, illness and death to many workers, which left many children here motherless, fatherless or orphaned, living in struggling condition.

Nguyen Bien Dong (3 years old) is one of orphans at Chau Hong kindergarten. “Dong is very pity. His dad passed away in a stone pit, his mother left home for years without any news since. Dong and his elder brother (Nguyen Ben Bien, third grader) live with their grandparents.

Lack of parental care and love, Dong always looks sad. At class, Dong is quite calm without smiles, easily gets nervous in front of strangers. He is underweight and looks smaller than other kids in class, required a specialized menu for malnutrition.

“It is so touching to see Dong and his brother walking on this road to school. Teachers in school and I always try our best to take care of them”, Mrs. Sam Thi Hieu – teacher of Dong told us on the bumpy and muddy road to Dong’s house.

Dong is in his grandmother’s arms

After being abandoned by mother, Dong and his brother live with their grandmother – Mrs. Vi Thi Lien. Their grandmother said: “It is such a pity for them. They cannot stop missing their parents, always want to come back to their home to sleep and feel of parents’ care. I cannot help crying whenever I look at them trying to sleep at night or when Dong asked his brother to take a role as his dad in their play”.

A bright future for the two orphans

To afford the two children to school, their grandfather has to go to catch eels and frogs at night for sale. “It is lucky for them to get sponsor for study, food and even milk from School Milk Program” – Mrs. Lien shared.

To support Bien and Dong and other kids in difficult circumstance, teachers at Chau Hong Kindergarten in Quy Hop commune has raised a fund to malnutrition children. “Each teacher contributes a sponsor from their own salary into this fund, which is spent for milk and food to improve nutrition of poor children in school”, Mrs. Lien said. However, sponsors from teachers cannot be enough.

“As School Milk Program – For Vietnamese Stature Program sponsor our fund, students with difficult circumstances have a chance to drink milk. Families and teachers are happy to see them with a good condition of nutrients to grow up as well-off children”, Mrs. Truong Thi Lien said.

In general, there are 4,533 poor students over 14,942 kindergarten and primary students in Quy Hop have a chance to drink milk daily like Dong. Mrs. Lien hopes that there will be more and more individuals, organizations sponsor and support School Milk Program to guarantee a sustainable source of free school milk for poor students.
