Baby Hoang Long needs a strong heart

Congenital heart disease is one of the most deadly diseases in the newborn. In most cases of congenital heart disease, the best treatment is surgery. However, not all families are able to afford this. There are many families in difficulty and have fallen into poverty when pursuing cures for congenital heart disease. For Vietnamese Stature Foundation (VSF) has supported baby Vu Hoang Long, aged 3 months from Ninh Binh province. This is a case of congenital heart disease in very difficult circumstances.

In the event “Run for the Heart”, on December 3, 2017, at Yen So Park - Gamuda Land VSF has committed to sponsor the cost of heart surgery at almost 30 million VND. This money was donated by Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thanh, wife of the late Professor Nguyen Trong Nhan. VSF spent this donation on supporting the cost of surgery for Vu Hoang Long who was diagnosed with "Large ventricular septal perforation slightly under the aortic valve - Minor hypertrophy of the right ventricle - small oval". He underwent surgery at the Heart Center, E Hospital.

March 19, 2018, VSF has come to congratulate the medical staff on this successful operation and to support Hoang Long and his family.

Hoang Long was born in a family with two sons. Due to difficult circumstances, his elder brother was 10 years old when his mother gave birth to him. Right from the womb, Hoang Long has been diagnosed with congenital heart disease. His family only depends on their grandparents’ small fields, so their livelihood is always in the balance. In addition to working in the field, his father also worked as a mason or he did ‘odd jobs’ to earn additional money. His mother was postnatal, too weak to go to work, so she could only take care of him. The family’s house is also built temporarily on the land left by their grandparents. It’s livable in sunny season, but in rainy season, it’s very wet. There is no money for quality repairs, his father has to keep making temporary repairs on the house.

Since Long was born, he has been taken to local hospitals and city hospitals. Doctors advised the family he should be given surgery soon so that the disease does not adversely affect his health long term. But the cost is high, his family can only rely on donations for him to have surgery. This is very meaningful to his family, not only to help his parents’ current situation but also to help Long have a healthier life.

Dr. Luu Phuong Linh – Paediatric Cardiology Department said: "The baby's health is recovering quite well. The circumstances of this child are very unfortunate. The generosity of benefactors will improve his chance of survival.”

Since its foundation (2014), VSF has supported over 100 free heart surgery cases. There are cases where VSF has spent over 50 million VND to help.

Rescuing Hoang Long is also improving the future of a young family living in Ninh Binh. The joys multiply when the surgery has been performed on time, bringing happiness to them who are praying for a simple dream: good health for the family.
