In this June - Action for Children month, VSF officially commenced the project “Growing up with mountainous preschool students”. This is a large and long-term project that aims to sponsor midday meals and enhance the studying conditions of kindergarten students in difficult areas all over the country.
In the first call for funding, VSF aims to sponsor meals for all students at Khau Noong and Na O schools - in Thach Lam Commune, Bao Lam District, Cao Bang Province during the school year 2020-2021.
Khau Noong and Na O are 2 of 16 school sites of Thach Lam Kindergarten that haven’t had school lunch. Khau Noong and Na O are also among the most difficult hamlets of Thach Lam commune, 100% of households earn their living by farming and corn is their main diet. Because of difficult economic conditions and dissimilar intellectual abilities, the childcare capability of a number of parents are limited.
Going to school every day, the kids only bring with them a small bag of rice or ground corn, their lunches rarely have side dishes like vegetables or meat. Due to low nutrition amount in meals, a majority of preschool children here suffer from malnutrition, underweight and their rate of afternoon skip-out reaches up to 80%.
Children’s meager meals
According to a report at the start of school year 2019-2020 from Khau Noong and Na O school sites - Thach Lam Kindergarten, all 85 students from 3 to 5 years old who are attending these schools suffer from malnutrition, their height and weight indexes are below standards (according to the standard of height and weight by age from the National Nutrition Institute)
In this predicament, the initiation of a specific project that contributes to the enhancement of nutrition and health for preschool children in Khau Noong and Na O school sites is tremendously essential. The support of nutritious meals not only significantly contribute to the improvement of the health and stature of children - the future generations of the country, but also keep them in school, motivate them to insist on studying and succeed in life. Furthermore, this project model can be enlarged in other difficult mountainous hamlets, playing a role in reducing the malnutrition rate in children, and contribute to the implementation of the National Sustainable Development Goals.
