"I feel very happy when I see half-boarding students eating the meals I cook. They often tell each other whether to eat two or three bowls of rice and what dish they prefer and complement the good food," happily shared Ms. Sung Thi Dau, the cook of Na O school site in Cao Bang, on our recent trip to the school site.
After arriving at the school site at 7:30AM everyday and confirming the number of students staying for lunch, Ms. Dau starts her work. From lighting the stove, cooking the rice, peeling and cleaning vegetables to grinding meat, every step is carefully executed by Ms. Dau to ensure hot, nutritious, and safe meals for more than 20 students studying here.
Na O school site is located in a high and rugged hill. Although the school site has a clean water system, water is sometimes cut off. When it happens, Ms. Dau has to return to her house to transport water in a bucket to the school site to cook the meals and wash the dishes. Despite such difficulties, she always completes her work.
"I see students going to school more regularly, and everyone of them is taller and bigger," said Ms. Dau. It is also the motivation for her to finish her work everyday.
Ms. Dau and four others at five school sites in Bao Lam commune, Cao Bang province are one of the resources playing an important role in the success of the "Growing up with mountainous preschool students" in the past two school years. They have been doing this work since the 2020-2021 school year, when the Project started to be implemented, sponsoring meals for half-boarding preschool students where they live.
"Growing up with mountainous preschool students" is VSF's big and long-term project launched in 2020 to sponsor meals for half-boarding students and improve the learning conditions of preschool students in many remote areas across the country.
In the 2021-2022 school year, VSF, along with BAC A BANK, MoMo e-wallet, Umbalena reading app, and other sponsors, joined hand to provide 42,000 meals for 210 half-boarding preschool students from 5 school sites of Thach Lam and Thai Son kindergartens (Bao Lam commune, Cao Bang province).
