On July 26-27, For Vietnamese Stature Foundation (VSF) held a training course called “Gender sensitivity in teaching” with 27 teachers from Ban Lau Primary School, Muong Khuong District, Lao Cai Province. The training course belongs to the initiative “Gender Stereotype Circle Breaking”. Directly managing the training course is Ms. Tran Hong Diep - Deputy Director of VSF.

During two days of training, through experiential learning activities, the teachers gained knowledge about gender concepts, gender equality, the role of promoting gender equality in solving social issues, domestic and international legal frameworks, and some gender issues that need to be addressed in the community.

Why do we need to have gender sensitivity in school teaching? What are the consequences if there is no gender sensitivity in teaching? - These were two of many questions that teachers discussed very enthusiastically.

“In the past, teachers have had the opportunity to approach gender issues and gender equality, but it’s not been detailed. Through this training course, they certainly had a wider perspective of gender and gender equality, of how to integrate knowledge into education, especially in subjects such as Vietnamese, Ethics, and Civic Education. In the long run, they will become active contributors to the eradication of gender stereotypes" shared Mr. Doan Van Chu, Principal of Ban Lau Commune Primary School.

Not only limited to knowledge-sharing activities, in the course, the teachers also pointed out the advantages and the disadvantages in the contents of textbooks, as well as developing an action plan to eliminate gender stereotypes in schools. They also practiced methods and skills in organizing experiential games and improvisational plays with children about gender and gender equality.

According to the plan, the Initiative “Gender stereotype circle breaking” will organize an Autumn Camp for 40 ethnic minority students at Ban Lau Primary School in September. The teachers enrolled in this training course will directly participate in supporting the Autumn Camp.
