“Children and gender equality - The train of change” training course for children in Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province

On Thursday (August 3), For Vietnamese Stature Foundation (VSF) in collaboration with Lao Cai Women's Union (WU), the Bac Ha WU and local authorities hosted a training course on gender equality for ethnic minority children living in difficult conditions.

This is one of the activities under the “No voice - no equal future” project implemented since May 2023 with funding from TH Group and the “Spreading true happiness” program of VSF.

Participants were 30 children aged 11 - 16 of the H’Mong ethnic group from San Sa Ho and San Bay village of Thai Giang Pho commune, Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province.

With the theme of “The train of change”, the training course was designed into three experiential stages: “I know”, “I see” and “I act” Stations to provide basic knowledge on gender and sex; gender stereotypes and norms; and current emerging gender inequality issues such as the burden of housework for women, pressure to earn money for men, child marriage, and domestic violence, etc. Through games such as Who's Faster, Mystery Gift Box, Speaking Footprints, Catch the Activity, and a painting session, the training course brought memorable and insightful experiences for children.

The achievements are:

100% of children were able to identify at least one gender stereotype/norm and one gender inequality issue in family and community.

100% of children expressed their willingness to become “leaders of change” and shared one particular activity that they would do to promote gender equality and erase the above issues.
