The elimination of gender stereotypes starts with the ability to correctly identify the existing stereotypes.

Let’s find out some gender stereotypes in this scene from the classic animated movie “Beauty and the Beast” with For Vietnamese Stature Foundation!

The line “The whole town's talking about it. It's not right for a woman to read.” shows the gender stereotypes that it is not necessary for women to broaden their knowledge and then develop fanciful ideas. Moreover, why should a woman learn when they would eventually step back to cheer men up and worship men’s “trophies”?

This is a gender stereotype which undermines women’s abilities, stating that they should only play the “sub” role and be the “background” for men and their successes.

This scene also reflects a sad reality that many women have also been reinforcing gender stereotypes. They consider it an honor for a woman to be noticed by a man, and that anyone who refuses such attention must be “crazy”.

In addition, the scene also demonstrates how difficult it is to stand up against prejudices in general and gender stereotypes in particular, as opponents often face discrimination from others.

Next Monday, the “Love without Prejudice” campaign will hold a challenge with exciting rewards for you to express your views on movie scenes that contain gender stereotypes. Please stay tuned so you won’t miss it!
