The rising average age of marriage and the decreasing age of sex have challenged the safety and well-being of sexuality.

Early age of sex, late marriage and challenges

According to the National Population and Housing Census, in 2019, the average age of marriage of Vietnamese people is 25.2 years old, an increase of 0.7 years old compared to 2009, of which men get married 4.1 years later than women (27.2 years old and 23.1 years old, respectively).

Meanwhile, according to the Survey and Assessment of Vietnamese Youth 2 (SAVY 2, published in 2010), the age of having first sex among Vietnamese youth is 18.1 years old - 1.5 years old earlier compared with that in the previous 5 years.

The current trend shows an earlier age of sex and a later age of marriage in modern generations. Although there are no specific research results on the ratio of premarital sex and unmarried sex, having one or more sexual partners before a desirable age has caused sexual safety issues for many young people. Sexual safety means to avoid getting sexually transmitted diseases, HIV / AIDS and unwanted pregnancy.

Young people need to understand sexual safety for their own well-being.

Besides late marriage, there is a portion of young people who seek sexual pleasure from their own and others do not expect marriages.

Masturbation is a completely normal sexual activity; but improper masturbation can affect mental health (causing dependency, reducing concentration in work) and physical health (genitals inflammation, etc). What is worse, however, is having unprotected sex with others.

Dr Tran Thi Minh Tam - an advisor of the project "For Mother and Baby - For Vietnamese Stature", has met many young male visitors who were diagnosed with gonorrhoea after having unprotected sex; and many female visitors who had genital warts. According to Dr Tran Thi Minh Tam, it comes from thoughtlessness and being misinformed in young people. This urges the need to maintain and strengthen educational programs on sexual and reproductive health in general and sexual safety in particular.

Be healthy and safe

Sex is a basic human need. However, without thoughtful conduct, we may incur detrimental consequences.

According to MA Nguyen Minh Hoang, Program Officer of the project "For Mother and Baby - For Vietnamese Stature" who has years of experience in consulting and communicating about reproductive health for teenagers - suggested 7 factors for sexual safety:

Factors for sexual safety were being delivered to workers in Hai Phong during phase 4

of the project “For Mother and Baby - For Vietnamese Stature”.

1. Both parties are MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY READY for sexual intercourse.

2. Having sex on the basis of VOLUNTARY.

3. Sex that based on MUTUAL RESPECT.

4. Having sex based on AGREEMENT.

5. NO ABUSE or HARASSMENT in sex.

6. Maintain sexual SAFETY to avoid getting sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancy.

7. SEXUAL PLEASURE for both parties.

Practising these 7 factors will maintain a healthy and safe sex life. However, according to MA Nguyen Minh Hoang, good understanding does not promise correct implementation. Strong will, discipline and daily practise is required to rigidly and correctly follow the above-mentioned factors.

Dr Tran Thi Minh Tam was presenting about sexual and reproductive health during phase 4,

project “For Mother and Baby - For Vietnamese Stature”.

In addition, Dr Tran Thi Minh Tam suggested some external factors that affect human sexual behaviours. Particularly, easier access to condoms and contraceptives will promote healthy sexual behaviours among young people. This is also the aim of DKT International and Golden Choice Company within its own manufacturing areas when cooperating with VSF in the project "For Mother and Baby - For Vietnamese Stature". To improve knowledge about reproductive health, employees are provided with detailed information about contraceptive methods and samples of condoms and birth control pills.

Other than those sexual wellness brands that we are all familiar with such as OK condoms and New Choice contraceptive pills, DKT International and Golden Choice Company will co-launch a new condom brand to diversify consumer choice. The new brand called “Fiesta” will promise to enhance the consumer’s experience. New products are available in pharmacies, supermarkets and e-commerce channels.

To achieve optimal and comprehensive results for the project, Golden Choice Co., Ltd. - Distributor of New Choice contraceptive products, has officially launched the contraceptive application named "Contraceptive Newchoice". During 25 years since establishment, Newchoice has always wanted to bring to the community safe and effective contraceptive solutions. The investment and development of New Choice Contraceptive application is an advancement of the brand's development strategy, helping women to have a safe and simple solution to contraception.

Currently, Newchoice Contraceptive application is available on both iOS and Android platforms, instructions for use and download here.
