Dr. Tran Kien, Deputy Director of the Institute for Social Development Studies, member of the Executive Board of the Men Network for Gender Equality and Sustainable Development in Vietnam, shares his views regarding the message of “Love Without Prejudice”.
“We often say that the feelings of love and hate are all natural. However, if we put such feelings in the context of gender equality promotion, we will realize that many kinds of love aslo carry prejudices. Take the notion of male chauvinism, or ‘One boy means one, ten girls mean none’’ for example. I think the message of the campaign carries numerous meanings. It urges the society to take a look back at itself, thereby having an impact on the awareness of readers and listeners.
Besides, I hope the campaign will take into consideration the fact that men are an indispensable part of gender equality promotion and gender-based violence elimination. The approach to issues which men have to face and address is different than that of women. Hence, gender sensitivity is required to know what issues needed to be approached and resolved regarding men, as well as how to support them and encourage their participation, helping the campaign to reach out to a wider audience.”
