The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25) is an occasion for governments and organizations all over the world to raise public awareness of issues related to violence against women in particular and gender equality and gender-based violence in general.
So why was November 25 chosen as the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women? Let’s find out with For Vietnamese Stature Foundation!
On November 25, 1960, the Mirabal sisters, who were three political activists from the Dominican Republic, were assassinated by the order of the dictator Rafael Trujillo. To honor them, November 25 was first chosen by women’s rights activists as a day to fight against gender-based violence in 1981.
In the last year of the 20th century, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Governments and organizations in the world are encouraged to join hands to organize activities on this day to raise the public’s awareness of the issue of violence against women.
