Extracurricular activities for the community have soon become the essence of a college student's life.
Nowadays, college students are joining several clubs in specialized subjects, hobbies, talents and volunteering that relate to different industries and cover from a university scale to an international scale. Some students are also participating in projects with realistic vision to bring direct impacts to the community.
Being involved in social activities, in any roles, students have the chance to step out of their comfort zones to work in a more professional environment; practice different soft skills such as interpersonal communication, group activities, leadership; and gain professional knowledge to be ready upon graduation. It is evident that joining student unions and doing projects help the young become more confident, more adaptable and more knowledgeable job seekers.
Over the past few months, 6 students from different universities in Hanoi have had the opportunity to gain their confidence, knowledge and leadership skills by participating in a project that aimed to enhance the wellbeing and working conditions for female workers. Throughout project implementation, they have been involved in the coordination and supervision of the group activities of female workers in Thanh Hoa.
Previously, these 6 students had participated in training sessions to perform the role of a collaborator. Topics covered during the training were: gender education, equality, project monitoring and evaluation,... These insights will have a long-term benefit to them.
The training activities are part of the "I am strong" project which is a collaboration of CARE International in Vietnam with VSF and other organizations. Halfway through the project, after the field trips with local female workers, our students (the collaborators) have got many positive changes.
The most outstanding improvement is attitudes and cognitive maturity. Students now realize the role of gender equality in the development of individuals, families and society. They have come to appreciate the perseverance of those women they met - who have undergone many hardships. They also learn to be more professional at work, in even small aspects such as being punctual, being prepared prior to activities and writing proper minutes of meeting.
In addition, these 6 students have also gained fundamental knowledge in various fields such as gender education, gender equality, project monitoring and evaluation, health care, education for the young, labor law and are aware of the inadequacy of the working conditions for workers.
Besides, our collaborators have had the chance to develop skills that are crucial for corporate jobs and for daily activities such as observation, listening, leading team discussion, taking minutes of meeting, taking photographs and adapting to change. These knowledge and skills will have a long-term benefit to their future career and life journey.
Having previously no concern to gender equality, now Minh Chau (Faculty of Law, VNU) realizes the importance of gender equality in the development of each individual, family and society. “The project has brought me times of contemplation. As a future legal consultant, I started to wonder about helping workers, especially female workers, to overcome current difficulties." - Chau has shared.
Giving real value to the community is also an indelible mark in the hearts of the students. "I feel happy because of the value that the project brings to the community. It is not a profound change, but a step-by-step improvement to daily things in life." - said Minh Thuy (Agricultural Academy) after witnessing better parenting skills from female workers who were the participants of “I am strong” project.
Students who had collaborated with the “I am strong” project are also the first generation of the DynaGen Initiative (organized by VSF). Besides broadening their horizons through training series, workshops and seminars, DynaGen students also had the opportunity to participate in community development projects with other reputable organizations. DynaGen encourages and is willing to provide financial and technical assistance for volunteer activities that are meaningful to the community, especially to women and children. In the second year of project implementation (2020-2021), DynaGen promises to further enhance student experience and diversify its activities for students to join.
