“I used to think that gender equality simply meant ensuring equal opportunities for men and women. However, after today’s training session, I have gained a deeper understanding of the difference between equity and equality, and most importantly, the crucial role of teachers in creating a learning environment where every student is respected.”
This was the reflection of a teacher after attending a gender-sensitive teaching training session organized by For Vietnamese Stature Foundation (VSF) in collaboration with the Quy Hop District Department of Education and Training. The training took place on March 16 at Ha Son Primary School.
During the session, led by Social Work Specialist Le Xuan Dong, 40 teachers from Ha Son Primary School and Van Son Secondary School engaged in discussions about common gender stereotypes in families, schools, and society. Practical activities, such as the "Mystery box" and the role-playing exercise "Lan’s story," allowed teachers to recognize deeply ingrained gender norms and the invisible barriers students face.
After analyzing the current situation, the teachers worked together to develop an action plan to promote gender equality in schools. Key discussions focused on integrating gender perspectives into lessons, reviewing textbook content, and organizing specialized workshops and extracurricular activities on gender equality.
Not only teachers but also more than 230 students from Ha Son Primary School participated in a gender equality awareness event on the morning of March 17. The event featured fun activities like movement games, mime performances, and human sculpture modeling, making it easier for students to recognize gender biases in daily life and reflect on how they can drive change. The session was facilitated by Artist Nguyen Hoang Tung - Deputy Head of the Experimental Theater Troupe, Vietnam Youth Theatre - and Specialist Le Xuan Dong.
"Today’s session helped me understand that boys can learn ballet, and girls can play sports. What truly matters is that everyone has the right to do what they love without being judged," shared a 5th-grade student.
The students also participated in the "Action to break gender stereotypes" activity, where each student chose one action they could take to promote change, from sharing household chores to respecting their friends’ interests.
Evaluating the impact of the training and awareness session, Ngo Xuan Song, Principal of Ha Son Primary School, stated:
"This workshop has helped teachers gain a deeper understanding of gender sensitivity in teaching and how to incorporate it into different subjects. The awareness session for students was particularly meaningful. Through relatable games and scenarios, students not only learned about gender equality but also felt empowered to express their thoughts confidently."
These two activities are part of the "Happy School" project for the 2024-2025 academic year, implemented by VSF. The project offers a comprehensive solution to improve school infrastructure and enhance the capacities of teachers and students in underprivileged areas. This initiative is one of VSF’s ongoing efforts to contribute to National Target Programs and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
