People often associate the term "gender equality with fighting for the rights of women and girls. But is that all gender equality is about? Let’s explore the question “Is gender equality only for women?” with Ms. Tran Hong Diep, Director of For Vietnamese Stature Foundation (VSF) and a Gender and Community Development expert with over 20 years of experience.
Interviewer: Does gender inequality only affect women?
Ms. Tran Hong Diep: Gender inequality also affects men in many ways. For example, they are limited in their opportunities to choose jobs that society considers suitable only for women, such as preschool teaching, embroidery, and sewing, as women are deemed meticulous and skillful. Moreover, when men face mental health issues, they rarely seek help because they don’t want to show weakness to others.
Interviewer: What consequences can gender inequality have on men?
Ms. Tran Hong Diep: When men are victims of sexual harassment, they often hide it for fear of being ridiculed or judged as "not manly enough to protect themselves." Being afraid to share and show weakness also can lead to mental health issues. Additionally, in workplaces with high risks or hazards, employers often hire only men instead of creating safer working conditions for all employees, regardless of whether they are males or females
Interviewer: In your opinion, what does it mean for men to contribute to promoting gender equality?
Ms. Tran Hong Diep: Promoting gender equality means eliminating gender inequalities for both men and women. When men join efforts to advance gender equality, they also benefit themselves. They no longer have to constantly appear strong, earn all the money, or carry all the burdens. Promoting gender equality means both men and women can share responsibilities, receive love, and live according to their aspirations and abilities.
Currently, VSF, in partnership with TH Group and BAC A BANK, is running the Let’s Orange 2024 campaign to raise awareness about gender equality, promote actions, and call for community involvement on the issue.
As part of the campaign, VSF will soon host a discussion titled “Men Leading the Way in Promoting Gender Equality” to discuss the role and participation of men in creating a more equal society. Stay tuned for updates about the discussion on VSF's communication channels!
